Maintenance Gap in Storm Drain Grates

Storm drain grates, the metal covers set into sidewalks and curbs near gutters, were once routinely maintained.

Upkeep actions included periodic sweeping, brushing, or vacuuming to remove leaves, dirt, sand, and small pieces of trash that gathered on the grate surfaces and between the bars. These steps kept the openings clear.

Such debris removal has ceased as a repeated practice.

The grates now stay in place without these clearing efforts. They remain visible and fixed within the concrete and asphalt surroundings.

This defines a gap in maintenance: the prior actions of sweeping and clearing are no longer performed, while the grates continue as part of street infrastructure.
